This special supplement focused on "Oakland Structures". After I decided to make the headline part of the image by putting stickers on a hard hat, the objective for the remaining imagery was set pretty high. The picture should show "construction" but it needed to be a clean-looking construction site, not messy and dirty. It also needed a blue sky) which eliminated the cheesy crane sillouette at sunset) and the third objective was a widely recognizable image of Oakland. As all this is pretty complicated to put in words to instruct a photographer I went out with a digital camera and took a few pictures myself so I could show the photographer what I had in mind. On of the snapshots I took turned out so well that we decided to go with it and not to try to re-create the setup and have someone else shoot it.
